Diving

The coral reefs surrounding Zanzibar are home to a over 400 different types of reef fish, turtles, dolphins, and other marine life. Humpback whales migrate from July to October. The inviting Indian Ocean surrounding Zanzibar has an average water temperature is 27°C and visibility of 10 – 40 metres.

Zanzibar is a paradise for everyone: the macro life lovers, underwater photographers, adventurers, beginning divers, snorkelers… Watch the green turtles cruise the current of the ocean, or the dolphins play in the azure waters surrounding the boat, or the small colourful nudibranchs on a beautiful variety of corals.

Whether you are looking to make fun dives on some of the beautiful dive sites around the island, or become a (more experienced) diver with our array of diving courses, or take a snorkeling trip to see Zanzibar’s underwater world from the surface – you will be amazed!

We also try to give a little back to the beautiful oceans, by organizing Clean up Dives as much as we can! You will dive for free while helping us clean the reef from all kinds of debris. Ask us when the next dive will be and help us save the oceans – one dive at a time! All the items we collect are registered on the website of Project AWARE, to help them gather information to tackle the issue of marine debris.

Diving Sites

MNEMBA

On the east coast of Zanzibar, East Africa, lies the idyllic Mnemba island. This small, privately owned island is surrounded by a large circular reef, perfect site for scuba diving. In the clear turquoise waters surrounding this marine conservation area, a great diversity of marine life can be seen. Bottle-nose dolphins often visit the waters around the island and green turtles lay their eggs on its white beaches. From July till September, humpback whales cruise through the waters near Mnemba island. There are many beautiful diving sites around Mnemba and it is a popular area for both scuba diving and snorkeling.

MNEMBA - WATTABOMI

Depth: 6 – 40m
Beautiful diving landscape with patches of hard and soft coral spread out on a sandy slope. Let the current carry you over the large plate corals, that are home to a great diversity of fish species. Looking around when diving, you can often find large schools of fish in the blue. Turtles and larger pelagic fish, like reef sharks, are not an uncommon sight. An amazing dive for both experienced divers and beginners.

MNEMBA - KICHWANI

Depth: 6 – 40m
A steep slope and wall with mostly soft corals. Drifting slowly while diving along the wall, you will be amazed by the great diversity of fish: clownfish defending their anemone homes, trumpet fish hovering near the coral and odd shaped swimmers like batfish and boxfish can be seen all around. You see many schooling fish and larger predatory fish when looking around in the blue. Both interesting for beginning and experienced divers. If you’re really lucky you may even run into a group of dolphins passing by.

MNEMBA - BIG WALL

Depth: 14 – 40m
At the Northern edge of Mnemba, an island near Zanzibar, there is a long stretch of reef, with a wall dropping off to around 40 meters. When diving, there is a good chance to see big things here, though we can’t promise anything. The visibility is usually very good and the diving is excellent. However, due to depth and current, this dive is not for beginners.

HAMDUS OR LEONS WALL

Depth: 12 – 40m
Leons wall is a beautiful unspoiled reef, covered with soft corals and sponges. You can avoid the crowds at this dive site, while you enjoy all kinds of marine life. Look for the conspicuous leaf fish, that can be found all along the wall, in an array of colors – from green to white or purple. Great place for big stuff, great place for divers!

MISOLI

Depth: 12 – 40m
At this dive site you find yourself in a big area of typical white Zanzibari sand, with a big island of coral in the middle. The fish life is less abundant here compared to other sites, but many Nudibranches and other small critters can be found here. A challenge for the macro life lover, a challenge for any diver!

KICHAFI

Depth: 12 – 18m
A long stretch of healthy reef, home to big plate corals with lots of marine life. At this place there is a good chance to see green turtles. There is also a large sandy area close to the site, which makes it a good training ground for diving courses.

HAJI

Depth: 10 – 18m
A big mountain of plate coral, surrounded by other bommies with soft and hard corals. Lots of schooling fish can be seen at this place, such as yellow snapper. Bottlenose dolphins have been seen many times at this diving site!!! Or have a closer look at the rocks to find the perfectly camouflaged stonefish and scorpion fish.

Tumbatu

depth: 2 – 18m

A wall of corals on the east side of Tumbatu island, not far from Zanzibar, with the most healthy and colorful coral reef in Zanzibar! Dive and see turtle, cuttlefish, rays and common here.

Mwana wa Mwana

Depth: 2 – 15m

A small island north of Tumbatu, connecting both islands in Low tide. Beautiful corals, you can enjoy diving among groups of small silverfish and Sweepers, and if you are lucky some cuttlefish and seahorse will be diving with you!

Hunga

Depth: 10 – 18m

Beautiful site for diving, a patch reef (an isolated platform of coral), with hard corals spread on a big area, turtles, lobsters and Nudibranch can be found here, swimming around group of yellow snapper, unicornfish etc.

Nankivel

Depth: 6 – 16m

A small, isolated platform of coral (patch reef), concentrated area with very colorful corals and group of fish like yellow snapper. Very nice site for diving when touring Zanzibar and East Africa.

Shane’s Reef

Depth: 6 – 30m

One of the favorite local diving site, here you can always be surprise by seeing some weed scorpionfish, sea turtles, groupers, stonefish, remora, beautiful crabs and seahorses. Join our divers, our diving tours or our diving courses.

Levenbank

Depth: 14 – 40m

Very unique diving site, a reef deep in the open sea, near Zanzibar, with very untouched reef with a lots of different moray eels and triggerfish. Reef going down to a sandy bottom with high change for “big stuff”, marble rays, Napoleon wares, big groupers etc.

Coral Garden, Nyumba ya Kasa, Mwabgawa

Depth: 6 – 18m

A local reef very nice with big plate corals, giving chance to see a big number of blue spotted rays and sea turtles, as well as scorpion fish, stone fish, groups of batfish. Last but not least in our diving sites list.

“Nyumba ya kasa” in Swahili mean “house of the turtles” 🙂
